Population
The city of Valencia now counts with a total of 810.064 inhabitants and it is the centre of a wide metropolitan area reaching one million and a half. It represents the 16 % of the population of the Valencian Community and it is the third city of Spain based on its demographical figure after Madrid with 3.213.271 inhabitants and Barcelona with 1.615.908 habitants.
Throughout the whole Twenty Century, the city has doubled by three and a half its initial population being the terms of greater demographical growth the decade of 1930-1940 and the 60 decade. In the first years of the Twenty First Century, the city is experiencing a very positive dynamic demography, bolstered by migratory movements, also an incentive of birth-rate.
The progressive increase of life expectancy and the reduction of fecundity experienced since the sixty years have been shown in the pyramid of ages reduced in its very base and that widens in its upper part, with a growing trend of older generations. However, the growth of last years has caused a widening in the base of the pyramid. The population of the city is relatively young, with a 19% of its effectives in the generations from 15 to 29 years and a 33% in the ages of 30 to 49 years.
