Valencia's history
Its very origins
The root name of Valencia comes from Latin and it meant “courage and
strength”. It is said Romans called it like this acknowledging the
former Roman soldiers’ braveness after a war. The city of Valencia was
founded in the Second Century Before Christ when Roman soldiers settled
here and fought the Iberians and its chief rebel Viriatus.
Valencia is an autonomous community and most of its people live in the
capital city but the whole province counts with 265 municipalities.
